Get Set 2012
The school has recently been officially welcomed in to London 2012’s Get Set network, in recognition of their commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and
Paralympic Games (LOCOG) awarded the school a plaque and certificate to acknowledge their involvement
in the London 2012 education programme. They now join schools
and colleges across the UK
as members of the a special London 2012 community – the Get Set network - and
will receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related
opportunities over the coming years.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of LOCOG, said: “When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people.
“I am proud to welcome Thornton Grammar School in to the Get Set network for their exciting work around the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and equality.”
Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme for schools, college and local authority education providers across the UK. The Get Set website offers a huge range of opportunities and resoures targeted at 3-19 year olds. On the web site you will find a whole range of flexible, interactive learning resources designed to get you thinking about the Olympic and Paralympic Values and the London 2012 Games – with games, fact sheets, films, news articles and much more. To visit the Get Set Web Site click here.
The school has chosen to become a member of the network in order to build on our successes within and beyond curriculum time and utilising the Get Set programme and the excitement generated by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Our school motto is “Committed to Excellence” and when combined with the values of the Olympic and Paralympic games we intend to inspire our students to be the very best that they can be. Joining Get Set will enable us to pull together academic and sporting excellence, utilise better our Young Ambassadors within our school and sports partnership, develop further our International Inspirations links with our school in Bangladesh and enable us to develop and enhance our coaching and officiating capacity.
Our Platinum and Gold Young Ambassadors have led assemblies at our partner primary schools based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values utilising Get Set resources. They have also spoken at a Leadership Academy, to over 60 young leaders that was organised by our sports partnership. Assemblies promoting Olympic and Paralympic values have been undertaken with all year groups within school and these will be followed by specific assemblies that will focus on each of the values in turn. Students, staff and non-teachers are working hard to gain qualifications within coaching and officiating so that we can expand the range of activities available within our school and local community. Through our House System we have established 4 House Olympic Organising committees that are student led, to develop a whole range of House Olympic and Paralympic House competitions to be undertaken by as many students as possible in the run up to London 2012. Finally, the female members of the PE department are in the process of developing a whole range of resources, Olympic and Paralympic based, to be used in our partner Girls school situated in Bangladesh.
Towards 2012
Thornton Grammar School is committed to ensuring all students are “Committed to Excellence” and will use the inspiration of London 2012 to help with this aim. In our run up to the Games students will;
• Have increased opportunities to take part in Olympic and Paralympic events,
organised and run via student House Olympic Committees
• Understand how the values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement can be inculcated within everyday life, making them better young people able to meet future challenges
• Be able to become young leaders within sport, mathematics and modern languages
• Gain leadership, coaching and officiating qualifications and be signposted towards community and school clubs leaving a lasting legacy within school and the local community
• Visit our partner school in Bangladesh to further spread the message and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement
We aim to develop a lasting legacy of students developing coaching, officiating and leadership skills in a wide range of sports and activities. We also hope that students will be able to understand how the values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement can have a positive influence within their own life.
