A tribute to John Weir
Published under Announcements Friday 23 July, 2010
Mr John Weir, Headteacher of Thornton Grammar School, retires this summer after 36 years committed service to the school. Mr Weir began his career in 1972 as a teacher of Mathematics at Buttershaw Comprehensive School, moving to Thornton in 1974. His leadership qualities and management skills were very quickly recognised and he gained rapid promotion. Following the untimely death of Mr GJF Twistleton in 1994 he was appointed Headteacher, a position he has dedicated himself to for the last 16 years.
The contribution he has made to the continuing success of the school cannot be overestimated. Under his strong and focussed leadership the school has been transformed into a high performing specialist Sports, Science and Applied Learning College with Trust Status. He has steered Thornton to the position it now occupies as one of the city’s leading schools, enjoying an enviable reputation that is reflected in its popularity.
Patrick Wilkings, Chair of Governors, paid tribute to Mr Weir: ‘John’s contribution to the development of the school cannot be overestimated. Under his outstanding leadership the school has been transformed and is now in a strong position to face the challenges and opportunities of the future’.
Clive Truelove, Deputy Headteacher, said, ‘Mr Weir has worked tirelessly on ensuring that Thornton Grammar School is at the heart of the community. He has always been proud to lead a multi-cultural school that celebrates the achievements and diversity of all its students’.
Chris Sampson, Deputy Headteacher, reflected on Mr Weir’s career and its impact ‘To those that know him John Weir is Thornton Grammar School. His unrelenting focus has been on achievement while at the same time he has created a caring but disciplined learning environment in which everyone is valued and can succeed. The whole school and everyone connected with it, past and present, wish him a long and happy retirement’.

Athletics Gold for Thornton
Published under Sport Results Monday 19 July, 2010
Thornton Grammar produced one of their most convincing athletics victories since the good old days of when Mr Halliley and Mr Makinson were involved in running the team and food was still being rationed. Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 won their own Boy’s and Girl’s competitions for each respective age group as well as the combined overall team gold. West Bradford Partnership Development Manager Rich Nicholls has now had to book himself on a holiday to the Lynx Creek, Arizona on a gold digging expedition to help restore Bradford’s gold supplies due to almost 90 Thornton Grammar School pupils collecting gold medals on the podium at the Horsfall Stadium.
There were outstanding performances across the age ranges but special mentions must go out to the following individuals.
Luqman Ahmed ran the most aggressive 1500 m race of his life.
Harrison ‘zulu’ Williams throwing the Javelin like the warrior he shines to be.
Dylan ‘Usain Bolt’ Naylor powering over to win the 4 x 100m relay.
Leoni ‘lolly pop’ Craven the friendliest middle distance runner in the West Bradford.
Finally, Ellicia Williams and Holly McGrath who won everything they participated in.
There is much speculation revolving around whether team water boy, Mr Painter will be getting the golden phone call from Lord Seb Coe and the London 2012 team after his outstanding contribution to the team. Could he yet be dragged away from the Howarth dream? Watch this space!!!!!

Published under Sport News Thursday 10 June, 2010
Three of our students, Jonathan Holdsworth, Antonio Gesso and Daniel Hall participated in a European Football Tournament in Holland on Saturday. The Bradford Disability Football Club, for whom they play, came 5th & 6th in the Tournament, each team winning a cup for their efforts. They also won the FAIRPLAY trophy AND the PENALTY shoot out competiition. It was an unforgetable 4 day trip for the students. They had an absolutely fantastic time, and it was great to see kids with physical/learning difficulties achieving so much. If you would like to know more then please visit Bradford Disability FC.
