Science

The Science Department has had Specialist Science School Status since 2004.  We are an ambitious, forward looking department with specialist teachers in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, 12 well-equipped labs and a recently refurbished ICT suite.  We teach a wide range of Science courses, including GCSE Triple Science for students who wish to pursue a career in Science and BTEC Applied Science Level 2 for students who enjoy the practical aspects of Science.

KS3 Science

In KS3 we are teaching an innovative themed curriculum - Upd8 Wikid Science – which our students are thoroughly enjoying and which builds well on Science studied at KS2.

Science topics are mainly taught in context and in an exciting ‘hands-on’ way.  Themes such as ‘Cook!’ ‘Forensics’ and ‘Contact’ allow Y7 and Y8 students to become celebrity chefs, scene of crime officers and to search for extra-terrestrial life!  Our focus is to engage students in science and to provide secure foundation learning they can build on in future years. Y9 is a shorter ‘bridging’ course where students go deeper into topics and further develop their investigative skills in preparation for KS4

KS 4 Science

We offer a wide range of courses in KS4.

The route taken by an individual student will depend on aptitude in Science, their school option pathway and their ability in all Core subjects.
Triple Science - GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry  & GCSE Physics(AQA) - is offered as an option in Y9 to students who are achieving Level 6 and above in Science and Maths
Starting in September 2010 - BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science. Students will manly study for the Diploma which is worth four GCSEs
GCSE ‘Core’ Science (Y10)and GCSE Additional Science (Y11) - both AQA - is offered for those students who do not wish to specialise too early
Entry Level Certificate (or equivalent courses) is available for students for whom GCSEs are not the most suitable course.

KS5 Science

Our Post 16 numbers are growing steadily and our A level results have been outstanding in recent years. We offer the following level 3 courses.

– entry requirements for these courses include  GCSE grades BB in Additional and ‘Core’ Science or BBB in Triple Science and also B grades in English and Maths

entry requirements for this course include BTEC Diploma Pass or GCSE grades CC in Additional /Applied and ‘Core’ Science (or CCC in Triple Science) and also C grades in English and Maths.
